How strongly trauma affects us, and for how long, depends on things like the severity of the event, the support we have, and earlier experiences. Some people recover fairly quickly. Others take longer and may develop depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or an anxiety disorder.
At Ahead Counselling Psychology you'll receive specialised, holistic treatment that works to restore balance in your life.
Signs and symptoms of PTSD
Symptoms are usually grouped into three areas:
- Re-experiencing: flashbacks, bad dreams, frightening thoughts.
- Avoidance: avoiding places, events or objects that remind you of the experience; feeling emotionally numb or guilty; losing interest in things you used to enjoy; struggling to remember important parts of the event.
- Hyperarousal: being easily startled, feeling tense or on edge, trouble falling or staying asleep, angry outbursts.
Recovery is possible
Research shows stress disorders are effectively treated with psychotherapy and, in some cases, medication. At Ahead Psychology you'll find a strong commitment to recovering every aspect of your health and wellbeing, with a range of treatment approaches in a supportive, nurturing environment.
